Travel Guide

Climate

Tanzania and Kenya are in the tropics, but the only tropical weather you will encounter is at the coast where it is tempered by the ocean.  Much of both countries are at altitudes where mornings and evenings are cool and the days are warm in the equatorial sun.  The following describes typical weather patterns for northern Tanzania and southern Kenya.

June, July, August

Pleasantly cool, with possible showers with temperatures range between 50F (15.5C).

September and October

Days are warmer with expected temperatures between 65F (18C) and 90F (32C). There is the chance of brief showers as November approaches.

December to March

Though this is the summer period, temperatures rarely exceed 90F (32C).

April and May

Changing weather patterns have made the term the rainy season something of an overstatement.  Though travelers will encounter some wet weather during these months.

Visas

Citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas for entry into Tanzania or Kenya. The Tanzanian and Kenyan Embassy advise on visa requirements and should a visa be necessary this can be obtained in advance through the embassy or if necessary at the airport.

Insurance

Sporting Wilderness strongly recommends that all clients take out appropriate personal, medical, accident, all-risks, travel and trip cancellation insurance.  Flying Doctor’s insurance is also recommended and you may indicate your interest in temporary membership by marking your Safari Reservation form appropriately.

Medical Information

Yellow fever immunization is required for entry in Tanzania and Kenya. The date on the immunization certificate must show the inoculation was given 14 days prior to entry.  For other recommended immunizations we would urge you to consult your physician.

Both Tanzania and Kenya are malarial areas and we recommend that you consult your physician for precautions that should be taken against malaria.

Currency

Currencies are widely interchangeable in both countries, US$ being the most popular. Currency should be carried in the form of traveler's cheques and as little local cash carried as possible.

Clothing

On safari lightweight cotton clothing in tan, khaki and other neutral colours are the most practical. In addition to light trousers, shorts and shirts, a hat, sweater, windbreaker and comfortable walking shoes are necessary.  We are happy to provide a comprehensive packing list of clothing and equipment on request.

Photographic Equipment

We would be delighted to forward information on suggested photographic equipment on request.
