About Us

 

Joerg Bondzio was born and raised in the Bavarian Alps, which nurtured his interest in the natural world, wilderness areas and conservation.  After service in the German Army in a High Mountain Rescue Platoon, he ran his own forestry - consulting firm in Munich.

 

Joerg first went to Africa to train Tanzanian Government Mountain Rescue Teams on Mount Kilimanjaro in 1985.  He returned to Tanzania early 1986 and worked as a Safari Guide for Tanzania Big Game Safaris in wilderness areas throughout the country developing an in depth knowledge of African flora and fauna. During this time he also qualified for the Tanzania Professional Hunter’s Licence, which enabled him to offer walking and adventure safaris.  Joerg guided many mountaineering expeditions on Mount Kilimanjaro, the best publicised being “The Save the Rhino Expedition” from Mombasa to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.  Later as a Senior Safari Guide for Ker & Downey Tanzania and Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris, Joerg developed and ran mobile adventure safaris, as well as conducting traditional luxury tented safaris.

 

Joerg married Fiona in 1992. During her childhood Fiona lived in Pakistan, Kenya, Sudan and Britain, which nurtured a lifelong interest in travel.  She provides the administrative support to Joerg’s safaris running the base office.  She is also responsible for all the Sporting Wilderness camp menus. Together they formed a successful safari team with their own company Bondzio Safaris and Expeditions as well as working for other well-respected safari outfitters.

 

In 1993, Joerg and Fiona incorporated their own safari company Sporting Wilderness Limited (Kenya), which offers safaris in both Kenya and Tanzania.  In 1996 they moved to Scotland to incorporate Sporting Scotland Limited, which offers corporate challenge, incentive training events and field sports in Scotland.  They spend now their time between Scotland and East Africa.

 

Joerg speaks fluent English, German and they both speak Kiswahili, the lingua franca of east Africa.  He is member of the Royal Geographical Society and the International Professional Hunters Association.
